Why do I have Fire Ants?

For the very same reason we live in sub-tropical Southwest Florida is the same reason Fire Ants call it home, they favor warm and sunny weather conditions. They prefer dry fields and avoid shady areas (thick wooded vegetation). These colonies can have hundreds of thousands of ants with at least one queen. Southwest Florida Fire Ants can also move into your yard as a result of already being in an infested nursery plant or grass sod that is being installed in your home’s landscaping.

With colonies growing to be so large, they can very easily spread across multiple properties which makes the control and prevention of them very difficult. If your neighbors have Fire Ants, there is a very good chance you do as well.

One tell-tale sign that Fire Ants have moved in, is the discovery of their mounds in and around your yard. There mounds can become very large if gone unchecked. They can grow as much as two feet wide and nearly seven inches high with a population of 200,000 to 500,000 strong. You can also locate them by seeing activity of their worker and swarmer ants.

If you don’t see any mounds are any worker and swarmer ants, there is one final and not so fun way to detect them; you can be stung. Whether walking barefoot, wearing sandals in your yard, or gardening; you may fall victim to their stings. These stings can be extremely painful as their venom is highly irritating to humans and resembles a stinging and intense burning sensation.
